Making the process of General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS)

The process used is "Bulk Continuous polymerisation". The main raw materials Styrene Monomer, in the pump continuously together with the raw materials adjuvant into the reactor first.

The materials used, which include:

Initiator
Lubricant
And others.

Making the process Expandable Polystyrene (EPS).

Unlike the previous two products using the process of EPS "Batch suspension process". In this process, a mixture of the main Styrene Monomer and materials in its disuspensi solution trikalsium phosphate and water. The entire process is done in one reactor and is divided into 2 phases.

Phase I, polimerisasi all monomer into Polistirena. Polistirena that happens is a round grain that are commonly called Polistirena Bead.

Phase II, the solution is added pentane suspension as "Blowing Agent" so that the reactor will be increased pressure on the temperature and high pressure, pentane will polistirena into the bead slowly.

This process takes several hours. Once through to this stage two, the bead still must be separated from the solution suspensinya. This is done by "washing" using the solvent and washing machine and then dried in the dryer.

In general, there are 3 system process used to establish GPPS and HIPS into finished goods, namely:

Injection technology molding.
In this process plastic materials GPPS / HIPS heated in the heating cylinder to become liquid and homogeneous, and then pressed into a mold and cooled and then released from the molder to the goods so the appropriate form, such as the molder. Extrusion.

Materials Expandable Polystyrene (EPS)

Material EPS (often also called Styropor) is a type of plastic material that is made by suspension polymerisation, which would result-shaped grains round with a diameter of ± 0.5 - 2 mm.

EPS beads are processed in three essential stages;

PRE-EXPANDER
During pre-expansion by direct steam, the polystyrene bead softens, and the liquid pentane vaporizes creating microscopic closed cells within the polystyrene.
Steam Generator.
The density is controlled by adjusting the steam pressure or the EPS beads residence time in the steam expansion chamber.
As soon as the prefoamed beads cool, the blowing agent and the water vapor begin to condense. At this stage, a partial vacuum within each cell is developed.
MATURING
Before the pre-expansion beads can be used in a molding process, this partial vacuum must be replaced by air which diffuse in the cells of the beads from the atmosphere.This process is called maturing or ageing.
Whilst the beads are absorbing air, they are losing blowing agent and the rate of this diffusion is temperature dependent.
Maturing process generally takes several hours (generally 6 to 24 hours) depending on the bead size, expanded density and exposed temperature.
MOLDING MACHINE
During molding, the expanded polystyrene beads are injected into a mold generally made of aluminium alloy. The EPS is heated by injecting steam under pressure in the mold chambers, which penetrates into the mold cavity through vents (core-vents).
The residual pentane will again vaporize and the EPS beads will expand against each other and fuse together. Before the mold is opened, the heat must be removed. The rate of this cooling is mostly dependant on steam diffusion through the EPS molded part. Several factors affect this diffusion, namely molding machine vacuum suction assistance, number of core-vents, molded part thickness, voids between the EPS beads and bead size.

Safety & Handling Materials EPS

EPS beads contain a flammable blowing agent pentane. It is recommended that all possibility of ignition should be avoided. Should a fire occur, it is strongly recommended that carbon dioxide or dry powder fire extinguishers be used in the area of hot wire cutting equipment.

EPS has no toxic hazards towards skin contact.

Depending upon the market, EPS grades may be packed in any of these of packing :

600 kg net PP woven bag.
25 kg net paper bag.

Each packing container is provided with a separate gas barrier film liner EVA/NYLON which is tied at the neck to minimise loss of pentane.

EPS should be stored in closed packing. The hydro-carbon blowing agent will escape faster in hot environments. Hence, ample floor-level ventilation should be provided in storage.

It is generally recommended to process EPS within 1 month of delivery.
